HEART SURGERY
The Heart Surgery Department at our Heart Centre is responsible for around 350 major heart surgery cases per year, providing up-to-date, high-quality care.
CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION
Our Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Cardiology laboratory is a national benchmark in the percutaneous implantation of aortic valve prostheses in high surgical-risk patients.
HEART FAILURE
The team at the Heart Failure Unit establish a diagnosis, provide the most suitable care, and conduct outpatient follow-up for our patients.
ADULT CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE
The Adult Congenital Heart Disease Unit provides care for patients over the age of 17 years who have a congenital heart disease, whether or not it has been corrected, and for patients diagnosed in adulthood.
CLINICAL CARDIOLOGY
The Clinical Cardiology Service covers activities mostly carried out in outpatient clinics but also on clinical inpatient wards.
ARRHYTHMIAS
INHERITED CARDIAC CONDITIONS
In the Inherited Cardiac Conditions Unit, we treat channelopathies, syndromes, and other genetic-based diseases, often related to sudden death.
CARDIAC IMAGING UNIT
PULMONARY HYPERTENSION UNIT
In the Pulmonary Hypertension Unit, we provide care for patients whose pulmonary arterial pressure is higher than normal causing their hearts to have to work harder in order to pump blood.
MARFAN UNIT
Our Marfan Unit has officially existed since 2010, offering a multidisciplinary care strategy for patients with Marfan syndrome.
CARDIAC REHABILITATION
RESEARCH LABORATORY
The laboratory’s main line of research is the regeneration of damaged cardiac tissue in patients who have suffered an acute myocardial infarction or have chronic disease.

Research
The research activity of Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Victoria’s Cardiology Service covers many areas: stem cells, biomedical tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, ECG markers of inherited cardiac conditions or the percutaneous implantation of cardiac prostheses are a few examples of our current lines of research.
RESEARCH
Our main lines of research focus on prevalent heart diseases and conditions with the objective of optimizing patient management through diagnostic and prognostic improvements.
University Teaching
The Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Victoria is a university teaching hospital, and members of the Heart Centre actively participate in teaching at the University of Málaga (UMA). Professionals from our service have served as clinical tutors for medical residents since 1992.
UNIVERSITY TEACHING
Chair in Advanced Therapies
The Chair in Advanced Therapies in Cardiovascular Disease was established in 2017, following an agreement between the University of Málaga and various companies in the electromedical sector. Its purpose is to undertake in-depth research and disseminate knowledge on cardiovascular diseases.
CHAIR IN ADVANCED THERAPIES IN CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
Professor Eduardo de Teresa heads the Chair in Advanced Therapies in Cardiovascular Disease, with sponsorship from Abbott Medical, the Abbott Foundation, Biotronik, Boston, B. Braun, CSA, Medtronic, MSD, and Terumo.
Patients
The Heart Centre at Universidad Clínico Virgen de la Victoria University offers downloadable information for patients, including recommendations for their hospital stay, advice for patients with heart problems, and information on care after pacemaker implantation, catheterization, ablation, etc.
PATIENTS
Learn more about patients’ rights and duties, and about the heart failure patient school, with sessions taught by the patients themselves, in a new approach to traditional health education.
