Clinical Cardiology
The Clinical Cardiology Service at Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Victoria covers activities mainly carried out in outpatient clinics but also on the clinical inpatient ward.
The cardiology outpatient clinics take place in various locations. At the San José Obrero Specialty Centre, we have two morning clinics from Monday to Friday and another afternoon clinic. These provide both general cardiology care for patients referred from primary healthcare and follow-up visits after hospital discharge from a ward or the emergency department. These clinics operate as one-stop shops or rapid-access services, where echocardiograms, electrocardiograms, chest X-rays, Holter monitoring, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), or exercise stress tests can be performed shortly after the appointment, or even on the same day in some cases. These clinics account for the bulk of our outpatient clinical activity and the professionals who deliver the care are highly experienced specialists with outstanding scientific and technical expertise.
Our offices at the Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Victoria have a single general cardiology clinic whose activities are similar to those at San José Obrero, although the main focus here is on referrals from other hospital departments. This clinic operates from Monday to Thursday.
There is also an arrhythmia clinic on Mondays, a dedicated heart failure clinic on Tuesdays, a cardiac rehabilitation clinic on Wednesdays, and a cardiac catheterization clinic on Thursdays. We also have an adult congenital heart disease clinic on Monday afternoons and a Marfan syndrome clinic, in collaboration with the Heart Surgery unit. The Clinical Cardiology Unit also includes the Cardiac Stress Test Laboratory, whose daily activities are carried out in collaboration with part of the Nuclear Medicine Department.
The Clinical Inpatient Service provides care for patients on the Cardiology ward. These patients may have been admitted via the emergency department, but other admissions are programmed referrals from an outpatient clinic or the Coronary Care Unit. In general, patients admitted from the Arrhythmia or Cardiac Catheterization Units are attended by physicians from those units.
