Familial Heart Disease
Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Victoria
Familial Heart Disease
Familial heart diseases are hereditary conditions (generally affecting a single gene) that impact the heart and the great arteries. Their incidence is high, as they occur in 1 in 400 people.
These include cardiomyopathies (hypertrophic, restrictive, dilated, arrhythmogenic, etc.) and channelopathies (Brugada syndrome, ventricular tachycardia, short or long QT syndrome, and others).
These types of conditions must be addressed through a multidisciplinary approach, with the involvement of cardiologists, geneticists, sports medicine physicians, pathologists, and other professionals.
Because they share many overlapping features, they are managed in the Familial Heart Disease Unit, where we treat channelopathies, syndromes, and other genetically based conditions with familial presentation, frequently related to sudden death.
