Research
The research activity of Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Victoria’s Cardiology Service covers many areas: stem cells, biomedical tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, ECG markers of inherited cardiac conditions or the percutaneous implantation of cardiac prostheses are a few examples of our current lines of research.
RESEARCH
Our main lines of research focus on the most prevalent heart diseases and conditions. Our investigative efforts aim to optimize patient management through diagnostic and prognostic improvements, and the analysis of better therapeutic approaches.
Research Activity
Our research group was born from the need for translational research that would provide our patients with excellence in healthcare. Although our group is primarily composed of clinical researchers, we also have basic researchers supported by the FIMABIS Foundation (Mediterranean Institute for the Advancement of Biotechnology and Health Research) Research Laboratory in Málaga and the Department of Human Embryology at the Faculty of Medicine in Granada (Prof. Antonia Aránega).
Our group’s main research lines focus on the most prevalent heart diseases and conditions with the objective of optimizing patient management through diagnostic and prognostic improvements. Among these diseases are heart failure and the analysis of better therapeutic approaches (resynchronization and cell therapy); diabetes mellitus and its cardiovascular complications with early diagnosis and optimal revascularization treatment; the pathophysiological mechanisms (myocardial fibrosis) involved in severe aortic stenosis and new therapeutic approaches (percutaneous valve prostheses); hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; coronary syndromes and acute ischemic heart disease, and the effects of pre-infarction angina.
The Heart Centre’s research activity has seen significant growth over the last 3 years, with a major flow of projects funded by different organizations (the Andalusian and Spanish Societies of Cardiology, ISCIII, SAS, Progreso y Salud Foundation).
