Heart Failure
Heart failure is the pathophysiological condition in which the heart is unable to pump sufficient blood meet the metabolic requirements of tissues, or can only do so when the filling pressure is high.
This condition is increasingly more common. Although current therapeutic options mean we can increase survival and improve the quality of life for many heart failure patients, the average survival prognosis in advanced stages of the condition can be lower than that of many types of cancer.
The most common causes of heart failure are high blood pressure and ischemic heart disease, followed by vascular diseases (cardiomyopathies), etc. However, in most cases several causes overlap, making it difficult to attribute heart failure to a single reason. For example, high blood pressure can be a risk factor for suffering a heart attack and, simultaneously, the intrinsic cause of heart failure.
At Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Victoria’s Heart Failure Unit, we have the technical and human resources to establish a diagnosis and provide suitable care (both in the hospital and outpatient follow-up) for heart failure patients.
