Heart Failure
Heart failure is the pathophysiological condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood at a rate adequate to meet the metabolic requirements of the tissues, or can only do so when the filling pressure is elevated.
This is a condition of increasing magnitude. Although current therapeutic options allow us to increase survival and improve the quality of life for many of these patients, the average survival prognosis in advanced stages of heart failure can be lower than that of many types of cancer.
The most common causes of heart failure are arterial hypertension and ischemic heart disease, followed by vascular diseases (cardiomyopathies), etc. However, in most cases several causes overlap, making it difficult to attribute heart failure to a single reason. For example, arterial hypertension can be a risk factor for suffering a heart attack and, at the same time, the intrinsic cause of heart failure.
In the Heart Failure Unit at Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Victoria, we have the technical and human resources to establish diagnosis and provide appropriate care (both at hospital level and in outpatient follow-up) for this type of patient.
